A detection processing unit for continuous airborne radioactivity monitoring, designed primarily for use with Beta/Gamma particulate detector heads. Backward compatible with Thermo Scientific AMS-4 Radial Heads, with a large 7-inch touchscreen and integrated wireless connectivity.

Description

The RPC-1000 is a modern detection processing unit designed for continuous airborne radioactivity monitoring in nuclear facilities and emergency response environments. Its primary application is interfacing with Beta/Gamma particulate detector heads — including the Charthouse SMART Radial Detector Head and legacy Thermo Scientific AMS-4 Radial Heads — to ensure airborne radioactivity concentrations are maintained below safe levels, measured in DAC and DAC-hr.

The unit features a large 7-inch LCD touchscreen displaying real-time readings of Slow Concentration, DAC Fraction, and Fast Concentration, alongside alarm status and system configuration parameters. A high-intensity LED strobe and 85 dB audible alarm provide immediate alert in noisy industrial environments. An integrated pump control switch provides direct power supply for vacuum pumps without additional cabling.

Wireless connectivity options include 900 MHz and Wi-Fi, with compatibility for third-party remote monitoring platforms including Mirion and BHI/Bartlett. Wireless encryption ensures secure data transmission. The RPC-1000's modular design allows features to be added or removed as facility requirements change.

Backward compatibility with Thermo Scientific AMS-4 Radial Heads means existing instrument inventory can be retained. Minimal training and procedural changes are required — existing AMS-4 procedures remain applicable in most cases — and the streamlined calibration process delivers significant time savings for instrumentation staff. Future development will extend compatibility to additional detector head types — the RPC-1000 is designed as a platform, not a single-application instrument.

Plug-and-play compatibility with legacy Thermo Scientific AMS-4 Radial Detector Heads allows facilities to retain existing instrument inventory. Existing AMS-4 operating procedures remain applicable in most cases, minimising retraining requirements and procedural change costs. Easy 'plug and play' replacement of legacy AMS-4 Radial Heads with the new RPC-1000 requires no structural modifications, and streamlined calibration delivers significant time savings for instrumentation staff.

Charthouse SMART Radial Detector Head compatibility

When paired with the Charthouse SMART Radial Detector Head, the RPC-1000 gains hot-swap capability between detector heads, enabling in-field replacement without recalibration. The SMART Head retains calibration parameters independently via its onboard memory board.

7-inch LCD touchscreen

A large, high-visibility 7-inch touchscreen displays real-time Slow Concentration, DAC Fraction, and Fast Concentration readings alongside alarm parameters and system configuration. The large display directly reduces the risk of configuration error and erroneous false alarms compared to smaller legacy displays.

ALARA dose savings through real-time alarm capability

Real-time alarm capability allows personnel to safely work in contaminated areas without respiratory protection where airborne concentrations are within limits — a direct ALARA dose saving. When limits are approached or exceeded, immediate alarm response minimises time in the work area, reducing both external dose and the risk of internal radionuclide uptake.

Integrated wireless connectivity

Supports 900 MHz (1W and 250mW USA variants) and Wi-Fi wireless options. Compatible with third-party remote monitoring platforms including Mirion and BHI/Bartlett. Wireless encryption ensures secure data transmission across facility networks.

Modular design

Features can be added or removed as facility requirements change. Optional gamma area monitoring display provides mR/hr readout alongside airborne concentration data. Integrated pump control switch provides direct power supply for vacuum pumps without additional hardware.
